In the pursuit of healthy, radiant, and youthful skin, sunscreen is an often underestimated hero. While many follow cleansing and moisturizing rituals, incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine is crucial.
The Importance of Sunscreen
Using sunscreen is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your skin's appearance and health at any age. It’s not just for preventing sunburns; regular use helps reduce premature aging and lowers the risk of skin cancer.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen
Mineral Sunscreen
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to provide sun protection by reflecting UV rays. To identify a mineral sunscreen, check the ingredient list for these active ingredients. Note that mineral sunscreens can leave a white cast, especially on darker skin tones, but many have a slight tint to blend better.
Chemical Sunscreen Chemical sunscreens contain ingredients like Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Homosalate, Oxybenzone, and Ethylhexyl Salicylate. Instead of reflecting UV rays, these ingredients absorb them and convert the rays into heat by penetrating the skin.
Studies have shown that some of these chemical filters can enter the bloodstream. For individuals with sensitive or allergy-prone skin, chemical sunscreens may cause stinging or allergic reactions upon application.
For optimal protection, chemical sunscreens must be reapplied every two hours, whereas mineral sunscreens provide continuous protection as long as they remain on the skin.
Understanding SPF
Sun protection factor (SPF) measures a sunscreen’s ability to protect against UVB rays, which cause sunburn and dark spots. A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA rays, the latter of which can penetrate deeper and degrade collagen.
For daily use, an SPF of at least 30 is recommended. For extended outdoor activities, choose an SPF 50. Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen, so higher SPFs can help compensate.

Daily Sunscreen Routine
The sun’s rays can harm your skin even on cloudy or snowy days, so using SPF daily is essential. Sunscreen helps prevent aging, maintaining a youthful appearance with fewer wrinkles. Apply SPF every morning to your face, neck, and hands. Use about a half teaspoon for face and neck protection.
Apply sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine, after moisturizer and before makeup.
Here’s a suggested layering routine for summer with Renewal Revitalize products:
Cleanser Cleansing Foam
Toner Purifying Toner or Hydrating Toner
Serum Hydrating Serum, Double Hydration Boost Gel, or Botox-Like Peptide Serum
Booster Antioxidant Booster
Moisturizer Light Moisturising Day Cream, Oil-Free Hydrating Gel, or Moisturising Day Cream
Makeup Ensure your foundation includes SPF protection.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
SPF Levels Opt for SPF 15-30. Higher SPFs provide marginally more protection but can encourage prolonged sun exposure.
Avoid Sprays They may not provide an even layer and can be inhaled. Mineral sunscreens are rarely available in spray form.
Children’s Sunscreen Consult a pediatrician for the best sunscreen for toddlers and children. For infants, avoid direct sunlight and use protective clothing instead of sunscreen.
